Baluster mug with a spreading circular foot and acanthus capped C scroll handle. Engraved to the front with a later 18th century inscription, reading “The gift of the Duchess of Devonshire” above the initials FDT in flourished cursive script. Fully marked underneath for London 1735 by John Fossey (first reg. 9th Jan 1733)

Apprenticed to Thomas Tearle on the 7th May 1724, free 9th September 1731. This mark (Grimwade 1289) was registered between January 1733 and August 1734.
Condition: Sits flat on a level surface. The engraving shows modest wear but is fine. Hammering construction visible to the interior and a knock to the foot rim. Fine marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Silver marks are very good
